Mechanism of action
Nitroxoline is an antimicrobial agent derived from 8-hydroxyquinoline. The mechanism of action is associated with selective inhibition of the synthesis of bacterial DNA.
Indications and usage
Infectious and inflammatory diseases of the urinary tract (mainly pyelonephritis, cystitis, urethritis, epididymitis, infected adenoma or carcinoma of the prostate gland), caused by microorganisms that are sensitive to nitroxoline. Prevention of infectious complications during diagnostic and therapeutic procedures (catheterization, cystoscopy) in the postoperative period during surgical interventions on the kidneys and urinary tract.
Contraindications
Renal dysfunction, accompanied by oligo- or anuria, severe liver disease, deficiency of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, cataract, neuritis, pregnancy, lactation, hypersensitivity to quinoline preparations.
Adverse reactions
On the part of the digestive system: nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite; in rare cases - abnormal liver function.
Allergic reactions: skin rash, itching.
From the side of the central nervous system and peripheral nervous system: in isolated cases - ataxia, headache, paresthesia, polyneuropathy; with prolonged use, a case of development of the optic nerve neuritis is described.
Cardiovascular: in rare cases - tachycardia.
Against the background of the use of Nitroxoline, urine is colored saffron yellow.
