International name: Ammonia
Dosage form: solution for external use and inhalation
Chemical name:
ammonia
Pharmachologic effect:
Analeptic, antiseptic; It has a stimulating effect on the respiratory center - reflexively, acting through the receptors of the upper respiratory tract (the end of the trigeminal nerve). In high concentrations causes reflex respiratory arrest. When ingested in small concentrations has an emetic effect, increases the secretion of glands, reflexively increases the excitability of the emetic center and causes vomiting. When applied locally on the skin - antiseptic and detergent action. At the site of application, it dilates blood vessels, improves trophism, tissue regeneration and metabolite outflow. With prolonged contact, an irritating effect on the skin and mucous membranes can turn into cauterizing (coagulation of proteins) with the development of hyperemia, swelling and soreness.
Pharmacokinetics:
It is rapidly excreted in any route of administration, mainly by the lungs and bronchial glands.
Indications:
Fainting, ethanol poisoning, vomiting stimulation, hand skin disinfection, neutralization of acidic toxins from insect and snake bites.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity, dermatitis, eczema, skin diseases (for local use).
Dosing regimen:
Inhalation, oral, topical. Inhalation: gently bring a small piece of cotton or gauze moistened with ammonia to the nasal openings (for 0.5-1 s) or apply a vial with a braid (when the tip of the ampule is broken off, a gauze-braid is soaked with a solution). Inside (as an emetic drug), 5-10 cap per 100 ml of water. When insect bites are applied topically in the form of lotions. In surgical practice, they are used for washing hands according to the method of S.I. Spasokokotsky and I.G. Kochergin (25 ml of ammonia is dissolved in 5 liters of warm boiled water for preparing a solution).
Side effects:
Respiratory arrest (reflex, inhalation in high concentration), hypersalivation, sore throat, hyperemia of the oral mucosa. Burn the esophagus and stomach (taking undiluted drug inside).
Interaction:
Neutralizes acids.
