Mechanism of action
Antiseptic. Chlorhexidine is active against vegetative forms of gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, as well as yeast, dermatophytes and lipophilic viruses. It acts on bacterial spores only at elevated temperatures. Cleans and disinfects the skin without causing its damage.
Indications and usage
Handling the surgeon, the medical staff and the surgical field before the diagnostic manipulations, operations; treatment of wounds, burn wounds and surfaces; disinfection of the patient's skin. Rinsing the eyes, bladder and other body cavities (only concentrated solutions of 20% and 5% without surfactants). Disinfection of working surfaces of devices (including thermometers) and equipment, heat treatment of which is undesirable. Gingivitis, stomatitis, afty, periodontitis, alveolitis, disinfection of removable dentures; angina; postoperative nursing care in the ENT and dentistry departments (mouthwash and gel for local use in dentistry).
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity, dermatitis, allergic reactions.
Dosage and administration
The dose and method of administration depends on the indications and the dosage form of chlorhexidine.
Adverse reactions
Dry and itchy skin, dermatitis, stickiness of hands for 3-5 minutes, staining of teeth, deposition of tartar, taste disturbance (in the treatment of gingivitis).
For dilution of concentrated solutions used distilled water, alcohol, glycerin. Sterile solutions are prepared for washing body cavities, treating deep wounds and burns. Remains active in the presence of blood and organic matter. Do not allow the drug to get into the eyes (except for a special dosage form intended for washing the eyes), as well as contact with the meninges and the auditory nerve.
Chlorhexidine is incompatible with soap and also with detergents containing an anionic group (saponins, sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium carboxymethylcellulose). Compatible with drugs containing a cationic group (cetrimonium bromide, benzalkonium chloride).
