Mechanism of action

Rimantadine is an antiviral drug, amantadine derivative, or medantana, used as an antiparkinsonic agent, and which, together with that specific chemotherapeutic drug with antiviral activity. Rimantadine is active against different strains of influenza A virus (especially A2), is active against tick-borne encephalitis viruses (Central European and Russian spring-summer), which belong to the group of Arboviruses of the Flaviviridae family. The main mechanism of antiviral action is the inhibition of the early stage of specific reproduction after the virus enters the cell and prior to the initial transcription of RNA.
Pharmacological efficacy of the drug is ensured by inhibiting the reproduction of the virus in the initial stage of the infectious process.

Indications and usage

- early treatment and prevention of influenza in adults and children over 7 years old;
- prevention of influenza in the period of epidemics in adults;
- prevention of tick-borne encephalitis of viral etiology.

Contraindications

- acute liver disease;
- acute and chronic kidney disease;
- thyrotoxicosis;
- pregnancy;
- Hypersensitivity to the drug.

Dosage and Administration

The drug should be taken orally, after eating, drinking water.

Flu treatment: adults - on 1 day - 300 mg / day for 1-3 doses; in 2 and 3 days - 100 mg 2 times a day; 4 and 5 days - 100 mg 1 time per day; children 7-10 years old - 50 mg 2 times a day, 11-14 years - 50 mg 3 times a day, for 5 days.

Pflu prevention: adults - 50 mg 1 time per day, for 30 days.

Prevention of tick-borne encephalitis: no later than 48 hours after a tick bite - 100 mg 2 times a day, with an interval of 12 hours, for 3-5 days; risk groups (persons living or staying in a forest area) - 100 mg 2 times a day for 15 days.

Treatment of acute herpes infection: 100 mg / day for 1 reception within 3 days; prevention of exacerbations - 100 mg 1 time in 3 days.

Patients with epilepsy and anticonvulsant therapy in a history of prescribed in a maximum daily dose of 100 mg / day (while the appointment of anticonvulsant therapy due to the risk of developing an epileptic seizure). In elderly people and with CRF, the dose should be reduced.

Adverse reactions

Allergic reactions, dry mouth, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, gastralgia, flatulence, hyperbilirubinemia, headache, insomnia, drowsiness, anxiety, irritability, fatigue; dizziness, decreased ability to concentrate.

Special notes

With the use of rimantadine may exacerbation of chronic comorbidities.Elderly patients with arterial hypertension increase the risk of hemorrhagic stroke.
