Mechanism of action

Bromhexine has an expectorant, mucolytic action due to the depolymerization of protein and mucopolysaccharide fibers. Due to these properties, the drug changes the consistency and reduces the viscosity of the sputum separated from the bronchial passages, increases its volume and thus promotes expectoration. Bromhexine has a weak antitussive effect, in high doses, has emitic properties.

Acute and chronic diseases of the bronchi and lungs with a violation of sputum discharge: tracheobronchitis, bronchitis of different etiology (includingcomplicated by bronchiectasis), bronchial asthma, pulmonary tuberculosis, pneumonia (acute and chronic), cystic fibrosis, pneumoconiosis.
Sanitation of the bronchial tree in the preoperative period and during the therapeutic and diagnostic intra bronchial manipulations, prevention of congestion in the bronchi thick viscous sputum after surgery.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to the components of the drug, peptic ulcer disease (in the acute stage), pregnancy, breastfeeding.
With caution: renal and / or liver failure; diseases of the bronchi, accompanied by excessive accumulation of secretions, in history - gastric bleeding.

Dosage and administration

Bromgekin ingested regardless of the meal.
For adults - 8-16 mg 3 times a day. Children up to 2 years - 2 mg 3 times a day, 2-6 years - 4 mg 3 times a day, 6-14 years old - 8 mg 3 times a day.
The effect usually appears after 2-5 days from the start of the drug.
The course of treatment is from 4 to 28 days.

In extremely weakened patients and patients with the presence of the anatomical narrowing of the bronchi from the use of bromhexine, there may be difficulties in evacuating an increased amount of bronchial secretions. In such cases, the secret should be sucked away.

Adverse reactions

Allergic reactions (skin rash, rhinitis, etc.) are possible. Nausea, vomiting, dyspepsia, exacerbation of gastric ulcer and / or duodenal ulcer.

Overdosage

Symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dyspepsia.
Treatment: artificial vomiting, gastric lavage (in the first 1-2 hours after ingestion).

Special notes

When treatment is necessary to take a sufficient amount of fluid, which increases the expectorant effect of Bromhexine. In children, treatment should be combined with postural drainage or vibration massage of the chest, facilitating the removal of secretions from the bronchi.

Drug Interactions

Not prescribed simultaneously with drugs that suppress the cough center (including codeine), since this makes it difficult to discharge liquefied sputum (accumulation of bronchial secretions in the respiratory tract).
Incompatible with alkaline solutions.
Bromhexine contributes to the penetration of antibiotics (amoxicillin, Erythromycin, cephalexin, oxytetracycline), sulfanilamide drugs into bronchial secretion in the first 4-5 days of antimicrobial therapy.

List B. The drug should be stored in a dry, dark place.
