Mechanism of action

Mucolytic agent with expectorant action. Reduces the viscosity of the bronchial secretion due to the depolarization of acidic polysaccharides of the discharge of the bronchi and stimulation of secretory cells of the bronchial mucosa, producing a secret containing neutral polysaccharides. Bromhexine is believed to contribute to the formation of surfactant.

Indications and usage

Diseases of the respiratory tract, accompanied by the formation of a viscous secretion difficult to separate: tracheobronchitis, chronic bronchitis with a broncho-obstructive component, bronchial asthma, cystic fibrosis, chronic pneumonia.

Inside adults and children over 10 years old - 8 mg 3-4 times / day. Children under 2 years old - 2 mg 3 times / day; at the age of 2 to 6 years, 4 mg 3 times / day; between the ages of 6 and 10 years, 6–8 mg 3 times / day. If necessary, the dose can be increased to adults up to 16 mg 4 times / day, children - up to 16 mg 2 times / day.
In the form of inhalation for adults - 8 mg each, for children over 10 years old - 4 mg each, at the age of 6-10 years old - 2 mg each. At the age of 6 years - used in doses up to 2 mg. Inhalation spend 2 times / day.
The therapeutic effect may occur on the 4-6 day of treatment.
Parenteral administration is recommended for treatment in severe cases, as well as in the postoperative period to prevent the accumulation of thick sputum in the bronchi.Enter 2 mg p / c, in / m or / in 2-3 times / day slowly over 2-3 minutes.

Adverse reactions

Rarely, with prolonged use of the drug - nausea, vomiting, dyspepsia, exacerbation of peptic ulcer; in rare cases, angioedema, an increase in serum transaminase levels.

Contraindications

I trimester of pregnancy, lactation, hypersensitivity to Bromhexine.

With gastric ulcer, as well as indications of a history of gastric bleeding, Bromhexine should be used under the supervision of a physician. Bromhexine is not used concurrently with drugs containing codeine, as this makes coughing of liquefied sputum difficult.
In children, treatment should be combined with postural drainage and vibration massage of the chest, facilitating the outflow of secretions from the bronchi.
During pregnancy, Bromhexine is used in cases where the intended benefit to the mother outweighs the potential risk to the fetus.
Bromhexine is not compatible with alkaline solutions.
