Active ingredient and dosage form

Maltofer drops - solution of dark brown color.

In 1 ml of drops Maltofer contains 50 mg of iron in the form of a polymaltose complex of ferric hydroxide,
excipients: sucrose, creamy flavor, sodium methyl hydroxybenzoate, sodium propyl hydroxybenzoate and purified water.
Bottle of dark glass with a volume of 30 ml with a dropper.

pharmachologic effect
Maltofer is a preparation containing iron in the form of a polymaltose complex of ferric hydroxide. This macromolecular complex is stable in the gastrointestinal tract and does not release iron in the form of free ions. Maltofer is similar in structure to the natural compound of iron with ferritin. Due to this similarity, iron (III) from the intestine enters the blood through active absorption. It is this property of Maltofer that explains the impossibility of poisoning with a preparation, in contrast to simple iron salts, the absorption of which occurs along a concentration gradient. The absorbed iron is retained in ferritin-bound form, mainly in the liver. Later, in the bone marrow, it is incorporated into the hemoglobin. Iron, a constituent of iron (III) - hydroxide of a polymaltose complex, does not possess prooxidant properties, which are inherent in simple salts of iron (II).
There is a correlation between the degree of iron deficiency and the amount of iron absorbed (the higher the iron deficiency, the better the absorption). Maximum iron absorption occurs in the duodenum and jejunum.

Indications and usage

  • Treatment of latent and clinically pronounced iron deficiency (anemia).
  • Prevention of iron deficiency during pregnancy, lactation, during the childbearing period in women, in children, in adolescence, in adults (for example, vegetarians and the elderly) in accordance with the developed recommendations.

Contraindications

  • Excess iron content in the body (for example, hemosiderosis).
  • The breakdown of iron utilization mechanisms (for example, lead anemia, sideroachrestic anemia).
  • Non-iron deficiency anemia (for example, hemolytic anemia or megaloblastic anemia caused by a lack of vitamin B12)

Dosage and administration

Maltofer drops are intended for oral administration. Drops can be mixed with fruit and vegetable juices or with artificial nutrient mixtures, without fear of reducing the activity of the drug.
The daily dose can be divided into several doses or taken once. Take during or immediately after a meal.

1 ml (20 drops) contains 178.6 mg of iron-hydroxide polymaltose complex (50 mg of elemental iron), 1 drop is equal to 2.5 mg of elemental iron.

The dosage of the drug and the timing of treatment depends on the degree of iron deficiency.

Treatment doses:
Premature babies: 1 to 2 drops daily per 1 kg of body weight for 3 to 5 months.
Children under 1 year old - 10 - 20 drops per day.
Children from 1 year to 12 years old - 20 - 40 drops per day.
Children over 12 years old, adults - 2 - 6 ml (40 - 120 drops) per day.
Pregnant women - 4 - 6 ml (80 - 120 drops) per day.
The duration of treatment for at least 2 months.

In the case of a clinically pronounced iron deficiency, normalization of hemoglobin level is achieved only 2-3 months after the start of treatment. To restore the internal reserves of iron, Maltofer intake in prophylactic doses should be continued for several months.

Preventive doses:
Children under 1 year old - 6 - 10 drops per day.
Children from 1 year to 12 years - 10 - 20 drops per day.
Children over 12 years old, adults - 20 - 40 drops per day.
Pregnant - 40 drops per day.

Adverse reactions

Occasionally, there may be signs of gastrointestinal irritation, such as, for example, a feeling of fullness and pressure in the epigastric region, nausea, constipation, or diarrhea. The dark color of the stool is due to the removal of non-absorbed iron and has no clinical significance.
