Mechanism of action

Analeptic, psychostimulant, cardiotonic. It has a stimulating effect on the central nervous system, increases the reflex excitability of the spinal cord, stimulates the respiratory and vasomotor centers, regulates and strengthens the processes of excitation in the cerebral cortex. Increases mental and physical performance, reduces fatigue and drowsiness. Increases strength and heart rate (especially in large doses), increases blood pressure during hypotension (does not change normal). Expands blood vessels of skeletal muscles, heart, kidneys, bronchi, narrows - the abdominal organs. Increases the secretory activity of the stomach. Lowers platelet aggregation. It has a moderate diuretic effect. Blocks central and peripheral adenosine receptors. Stabilizes transmission at dopaminergic synapses, beta-adrenergic synapses of the hypothalamus and medulla oblongata, cholinergic synapses of the cortex and medulla oblongata, noradrenergic synapses. The action of the drug largely depends on the type of nervous system in the patient, therefore, the dosing of caffeine must take into account the individual characteristics of the nervous activity.

Indications and usage

Diseases accompanied by inhibition of the functions of the central nervous system, cardiovascular system, respiratory system (drug poisoning, infectious diseases, etc.). When spasms of cerebral vessels, to increase mental and physical performance, to eliminate drowsiness, respiratory disorders, enuresis in children.

Anxiety, agitation, insomnia, tachycardia, arrhythmias, high blood pressure, nausea, vomiting. With prolonged use may be slightly addictive (a decrease in the action of caffeine is associated with the formation of new adenosine receptors in brain cells). A sudden cessation of caffeine can lead to increased inhibition of the central nervous system with symptoms of fatigue, drowsiness and depression.
