Mechanism of action

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug for external use. It has anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect.

Indications and usage

  • Post-traumatic inflammation of tendons, ligaments, muscles and joints, for example, due to sprains, overstresses and bruises.
  • Rheumatic diseases of soft tissues, such as tendovaginitis (inflammation of the sheath of the tendon sheath), bursitis (inflammation of the synovial bursa), shoulder-hand syndrome and periarthropathy.
  • Local manifestations of degenerative diseases of bones and joints (for example, osteoarthritis of peripheral joints and osteochondrosis), in particular, pain syndrome.

The drug is applied to the skin 3-4 times a day and lightly rubbed. The required amount of the drug depends on the size of the painful area. For example, 2–4 g of Voltaren® Emulgel® (which is comparable in volume with the size of a cherry or walnut) is sufficient for application to an area of 400–800 cm2. Wash your hands after applying the product. The duration of treatment depends on the indications and the effect noted. Indications for continuation of treatment are recommended to be reviewed after 2 weeks.
An overdose of Voltaren Emulgel is highly unlikely, since the resorption of Diclofenac into the systemic circulation when applied topically is not great.

Adverse reactions

Local reactions: sometimes - allergic and non-allergic contact dermatitis (itching, redness, swelling of the skin area, the appearance of papules, vesicles, blisters, peeling).
Systemic reactions: in some cases - a generalized skin rash; allergic reactions (eg, bronchospasm, angioedema); photosensitization.
The patient should keep in mind that in case of an undesirable phenomenon that is not mentioned in the package leaflet, he / she should inform the attending physician or pharmacist about this phenomenon.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to diclofenac, propylene glycol, isopropyl alcohol or other ingredients of the drug. Voltaren Emulgel is also contraindicated in those patients who, after taking Acetylsalicylic acid or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, had asthma attacks, urticaria, or acute rhinitis.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Since there is no experience with Voltaren Emulgel in pregnant women, it is not recommended for use in this category of patients.
The active substance of the drug is not detected in breast milk of breastfeeding mothers, however, there is no experience with Voltaren Emulgel during lactation.
Experience with Voltaren Emulgel in children is not available.

Voltaren Emulgel should be applied only to normal, intact skin, avoiding contact with damaged areas and open wounds. Do not allow contact with the drug on the mucous membrane of the eyes and other mucous membranes.
The probability of the development of systemic side effects with the local application of diclofenac, in comparison with its ingestion, is low, but increases with the application of Voltaren Emulgel to relatively large surfaces of the skin for a long time.
The drug can not be taken orally.
