In pregnancy, folic acid deficiency increases the risk of congenital malformations caused by defects of the neural tube, as well as malnutrition and prematurity.
Iodine contributes to the normal functioning of the thyroid gland, is part of its hormones (thyroxine, triiodothyronine). Iodine deficiency leads to the development of endemic goiter, cretinism.
As an additional source of folic acid and iodine for women during pregnancy and lactation.
