Composition

Mechanism of action

Antimicrobial, antibacterial (bacteriostatic). Nitrofuran derivative.
Violates the activity of certain enzyme systems of bacteria.
It is active against gram-negative microorganisms (Shigella spp., Salmonella spp.,) And some gram-positive microorganisms, Trichomonas, Giardia. Inactive against pathogens and purulent anaerobic infections. Furazolidone is also active against a number of bacteria resistant to antibiotics and sulfonamides. The resistance of microorganisms to furazolidone develops slowly.
It is rapidly absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract, distributed to the tissues (including the central nervous system), and is converted into an amino derivative in the liver. Excreted by the kidneys and intestines.

Indications and usage

Dysentery, paratyphoid, foodborne diseases, trichomonas colpitis, urethritis, giardiasis. Infected wounds and burns.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity, end-stage chronic renal failure, deficiency of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, age less than 1 month.

Dosage and Administration

The drug should be taken orally, after eating, drinking plenty of liquid.
With dysentery, paratyphoid, foodborne diseases prescribefor adults 100-150 mg 4 times a day, after meals, for 5-10 days.Doses for kids reduced according to age.
The duration of treatment depends on the nature and severity of the infection. You can prescribe the drug in the same doses in cycles of 3-6 days with an interval of 3-4 days. It is not recommended to take the drug for more than 10 days.
When Trichomonas urethra take orally 100 mg 4 times a day for 3 days.
With giardiasis prescribe for adults 100 mg 4 times a day. For children at the rate of 10 mg / kg per day in 3-4 doses.
Maximum doses for adults: single 200 mg daily 800 mg.

Adverse reactions

In some cases, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, allergic reactions (skin rash, hyperemia and itching of the skin, allergic edema) may occur.

Overdosage

Acute toxic hepatitis, hematotoxicity, neurotoxicity (polyneuritis).

Limited for use in chronic renal failure, diseases of the nervous system. For the prevention of neuritis with prolonged use should be combined with Vitamins of group B.
Furozolidone has the ability to sensitize the body to the action of alcohol and can be used to treat chronic alcoholism with a lack of efficacy of other drugs or the presence of contraindications to their use.
It should be borne in mind that Furazolidone is an MAO inhibitor, so its use should follow the same precautions as with the use of classical MAO inhibitors.

Drug Interactions

Means, alkalizing urine, reduce the effect (accelerate the excretion with urine), acidifying - increase. Aminoglycosides and Tetracycline enhance antimicrobial properties.
Increases blood depression against chloramphenicol and ristomycin.
