Mechanism of action
Levomycetin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic; it is effective against many gram-positive cocci (gonococci and meningococci), various bacteria (intestinal and hemophilus bacilli, salmonella, shigella, klebsiella, serration, iris, protei), rickettsia, spirochetes, and some major viruses. The drug is active against strains resistant to penicillin, streptomycin, sulfonamides. It is weakly active against acid-resistant bacteria, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, clostridia and protozoa.
Acts bacteriostatic. The mechanism of antibacterial action is associated with impaired protein synthesis of microorganisms.
Drug resistance to the drug develops relatively slowly, while, as a rule, cross-resistance to other chemotherapeutic agents does not occur.
