Mechanism of action

ALCAIN - local anesthetic agent; the action is due to the blockade of voltage-dependent sodium channels, which prevents the generation of impulses in the terminations of sensory nerves and conduction of impulses along the nerve fibers. Suppresses holding not only pain, but also impulses of other modalities. The action develops in 20-30 seconds after application and lasts up to 15 minutes.

Indications and usage

Local anesthesia in ophthalmology (for carrying out short-term diagnostic and therapeutic procedures that require quick and short-term anesthesia): cataract surgery, removal of the suture from the cornea or conjunctiva; tonometry, gonioscopy; removal of foreign bodies from the cornea; conjunctival scraping for diagnostic purposes.

Dosage and administration

When performing tonometry and other procedures of a short duration, 1-2 drops are instilled immediately before the examination. For small surgical procedures (removal of a foreign body or removal of a suture thread) 1-2 drops are instilled every 10-15 minutes (1-3 doses). With prolonged anesthesia (during cataract removal) - 1-2 drops every 5-10 minutes (3-5 doses). After surgical manipulation it is necessary to cover the eye with a bandage, since The blink reflex is temporarily eliminated.

Adverse reactions

Itching, burning and hyperemia of the conjunctiva; allergic reactions (extremely rare - acute diffuse epithelial keratitis with filamentous formations and / or rejection of a large area of ​​necrotic epithelium, widespread stromal edema), inflammation of the Descemet cornea, iritis. With prolonged use - an infection and / or clouding of the cornea, prolonged loss of vision; perforation of the cornea.

Special notes

Prolonged use reduces efficacy (the duration of anesthesia) and slows wound healing. Additional instillation increases the risk of developing an infection, clouding or perforation of the cornea. Designed for local use only.The patient should be warned about the inadmissibility of touching the eye, until the anesthetic effect ends (the surface of the eye is not sensitive and can be scratched).
