Active ingredient and dosage form


Spray nasal dispensed 0.1%:

1 ml contains xylometazoline hydrochloride 0.5 mg and 1 mg;
Excipients: sodium dihydrogen phosphate dihydrate, sodium hydrogen phosphate dodecahydrate, disodium edetate, benzalkonium chloride (in the form of a 50% solution), sorbitol 70%, hypromellose, sodium chloride, purified water;
10 ml in a bottle with a metering device.

Mechanism of action

Otrivin - a vasoconstrictor drug for local use in an ENT practice.

Xylometazoline has an alpha adrenomimetic effect. Causes constriction of the blood vessels of the nasal mucosa, thus eliminating the swelling and hyperemia of the nasopharyngeal mucosa. Relieves nasal breathing in rhinitis.

The drug has a balanced pH, characteristic of the nasal cavity. The composition of the drug includes inactive components - sorbitol and hypromellose, which are moisturizers, which allows to reduce the symptoms of irritation and dryness of the nasal mucosa, resulting from prolonged use of xylometazoline.

In therapeutic concentrations does not irritate the mucous, does not cause hyperemia. The effect occurs a few minutes after application and lasts for 12 hours.

Indications and usage

Acute respiratory infections with rhinitis; acute allergic rhinitis; pollinosis; sinusitis; Eustachitis; otitis media (to reduce swelling of the mucous membrane of the nasopharynx); preparing the patient for diagnostic manipulations in the nasal passages.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to the drug; arterial hypertension; tachycardia; pronounced atherosclerosis; glaucoma; atrophic rhinitis; hyperthyroidism; surgery on the meninges (in history); children's age up to 6 years.

WITH caution used in patients with diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, with increased sensitivity to adrenergic drugs, accompanied by symptoms of insomnia, dizziness, cardiac arrhythmia, tremor, increased blood pressure.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

During pregnancy and lactation, the drug should be used only after a careful assessment of the risk-benefit ratio for the mother and the fetus; the recommended doses should not be exceeded.

Dosage and administration


Otrivin spray 0.1% 
prescribe adults and children over 6 years 1 injection per each nasal day (you can reapply if necessary), usually 3-4 injections per day are enough.

Duration of use - no more than 10 days.

Adverse reactions

Local: burning sensation, irritation and dryness of the nasal mucosa.

System: headache, nausea, rarely - tachycardia, feeling of heartbeat, arrhythmia, increased blood pressure, headache, dizziness, vomiting, insomnia, blurred vision, allergic reactions; with prolonged use in high doses - depression.

Drug interactions

Incompatible with MAO inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants.

Storage conditions

Store in a cool and dark place, protected from light and moisture, at a temperature not higher than 25 ° C.
