Pharmacological properties

Pharmacodynamics: Oxymetazoline belongs to the group of alpha-adrenostimulyatorov for local use. Has a vasoconstrictor effect. With the introduction of intranasal reduces swelling of the mucous membrane of the upper respiratory tract, which leads to the relief of nasal breathing and the opening of the mouths of the paranasal sinuses and Eustachian tubes. The effect of the drug appears 5 minutes after application and lasts for 8-12 hours.

Pharmacokinetics: When applied topically, oxymetazoline is practically not absorbed.

Indications for use

- treatment of acute respiratory diseases accompanied by rhinitis;

-allergic rhinitis;

- Vasomotor rhinitis;

- to restore drainage in inflammation of the paranasal sinuses of the nasal cavity, eustachitis, otitis media;

To eliminate edema before diagnostic manipulations in the nasal passages.

Contraindications

- hypersensitivity to the drug;

-atrophic (dry) rhinitis;

- taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors within the previous 2 weeks and within 2 weeks after their withdrawal;

- angle-closure glaucoma;

- condition after transsphenoidal hypophysectomy;

- child age up to 1 year - for drops 0,025%

- child age up to 6 years - for drops of 0.05%

In patients suffering from diseases of the cardiovascular system (arterial hypertension, coronary heart disease, chronic heart failure, tachycardia, arrhythmias), impaired carbohydrate metabolism (diabetes), impaired thyroid function (hyperthyroidism), pheochromocytoma, chronic renal failure, prostatic hyperplasia glands (urinary retention) and taking tricyclic antidepressants and Bromocriptine.

Use during pregnancy and during breastfeeding

The drug should be used after a thorough assessment of the ratio of risk and benefits for the mother and fetus.

Dosage and administration

Intranasal.

Adults and children over 6 years old: apply - 1-2 drops of a 0.05% solution in each nasal passage 2-3 times a day.

Children from 1 year to 6 years: apply - 1-2 drops of a 0.025% solution in each nasal passage 2-3 times a day.

Children under 1 year: children under the age of 4 weeks are prescribed 1 drop of 0.01% solution in each nasal passage 2-3 times a day. From the 5th week of life and up to 1 year - 1-2 drops in each nasal passage 2-3 times a day.

It is not recommended to use the drug for more than 7 days. With frequent and prolonged use of the drug, the feeling of nasal congestion may appear again or worsen. If these symptoms appear, you should stop treatment and consult a doctor.

Adverse effects

Burning or dryness of the mucous membranes of the nasal cavity, dryness of the mucous membranes of the mouth and throat; sneezing; an increase in the amount of secreted from the nose; after the effect of the drug has passed, a strong feeling of nasal congestion (reactive hyperemia).

Side effects caused by the systemic effect of the drug: increased blood pressure, headache, dizziness, heart palpitations, tachycardia, increased anxiety, sedation, irritability, sleep disturbance (in children), nausea, insomnia, exanthema, blurred vision (when getting into eyes ). With prolonged use - tachyphylaxis, reactive hyperemia of the mucous membrane and atrophy of the mucous membrane of the nasal cavity.

Preservative benzalkoniya chloride, which is part of the drug, may be the cause of swelling of the nasal mucosa. If this happens, you need to change the drug to another, not containing preservatives.

Overdosage

Symptoms: nausea, increased blood pressure, tachycardia, depression of the central nervous system.

Treatment: symptomatic.
