Mechanism of action

Xymelin - a vasoconstrictor drug for local use in ENT practice. Xylometazoline has an alpha adrenomimetic effect. Causes constriction of the blood vessels of the nasal mucosa, thus eliminating the swelling and hyperemia of the nasopharyngeal mucosa. Relieves nasal breathing in rhinitis.

In therapeutic concentrations does not irritate the mucous, does not cause hyperemia. The effect occurs within a few minutes after application and lasts for 10-12 hours.

Indications and usage

- Acute respiratory diseases with symptoms of rhinitis.
- Acute allergic rhinitis.
- Pollinosis.
- Sinusitis.
- Evstahiit.
- Otitis media (to reduce swelling of the mucous membrane of the nasopharynx).
- Preparing the patient for diagnostic manipulations in the nasal passages.

Contraindications

- Arterial hypertension.
- Tachycardia.
- Pronounced atherosclerosis.
- Glaucoma.
- Atrophic rhinitis.
- Hyperthyroidism.
- Surgical interventions on the meninges (in history).
- Children's age up to 2 years (for nasal spray).
- Hypersensitivity to the drug.
- With caution used in diabetes.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

During pregnancy and lactation, the drug should be used only after a careful assessment of the risk-benefit ratio for the mother and the fetus; the recommended doses should not be exceeded.

Dosage and administration

Nasal drops of 0.05% are prescribed to children aged 2 to 6 years, 1-2 drops in each nostril 1-2 times / day.

The drug should be used no more than 3 times / day and for no more than 7 days.

Adverse reactions

Local reactions: with frequent and / or long-term use - irritation and / or dryness of the mucous membrane of the nasopharynx, burning, tingling, sneezing, hypersecretion; rarely - swelling of the nasal mucosa.

Systemic reactions: rarely - palpitations, tachycardia, arrhythmias, increased blood pressure, headache, vomiting, insomnia, blurred vision; with prolonged use in high doses - depression.

Special notes

It should not be used for a long time, such as chronic rhinitis.

Effect on ability to drive vehicles and control mechanisms: Xylometazoline in doses exceeding the recommended, can affect the ability to drive vehicles or equipment.

Drug Interactions

Incompatible with MAO inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants.

Overdosage

Symptoms: increased side effects.
