Pharmacology

Paracetamol is a non-narcotic analgesic. It has a pronounced antipyretic, analgesic, as well as a weak anti-inflammatory effect.

Indications and usage

Paracetamol syrup is used in children from 3 months of life as an antipyretic for acute respiratory diseases, influenza, childhood infections, post-vaccination reactions and other infectious and inflammatory diseases accompanied by fever.
The drug is used as an anesthetic for pain syndrome of weak or moderate intensity, including: headache, toothache, neuralgia, muscle pain, injuries and burns.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to paracetamol or ingredients that make up the drug.Severe disorders of the liver and kidneys, blood diseases, deficiency of the enzyme glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase. Diabetes.

Dosage and administration

The drug is taken orally before meals 3-4 times a day with an interval of 4-6 hours.
Young children can be added to a bottle with water, tea.
In 5 ml of syrup - 1 teaspoon - contains 120 mg of paracetamol. The dosage for children depends on the age and body weight of the child.
A single dose is 10-15 mg / kg body weight of the child. The maximum daily dose is not more than 60 mg per kg of body weight of the child per day.
Depending on the age, paracetamol syrup is prescribed in the following single doses:
from 3 months up to 1 year - 2.5-5 ml (1 / 2-1 tsp) or 60-120 mg;
from 1 year to 6 years - 5-10 ml (1-2 teaspoons) or 120-240 mg;
from 6 to 14 years - 10-20 ml (2-4 tsp) or 240-480 mg.
The duration of treatment is not more than 3 days as an antipyretic and not more than 5 days as an anesthetic. Continuation of drug treatment after consultation with the doctor.
Before use, the drug is thoroughly shaken.

Paracetamol is not recommended for children under the first month of life. For children younger than 3 months, the drug is used only on prescription. Use with caution in diseases of the liver and kidneys, with Gilbert's syndrome.


When using the drug after 7 days, monitoring of the functional state of the liver and the peripheral blood picture is necessary.

Adverse reactions


Gastrointestinal: possible nausea, abdominal pain; rarely with prolonged use - abnormal liver function.
Allergic reactions: skin rash, urticaria, angioedema are possible.
Urogenital: rarely with prolonged use - renal dysfunction.
Hemic and lymphatic: rarely with prolonged use - anemia, agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia.

Overdosage


In case of overdose or hypersensitivity to the drug, pale skin, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain are noted. Increased liver enzymes, increased prothrombin time, and later - pain in the liver. In severe cases, liver failure, coma, and encephalopathy develop. In these cases, it is recommended gastric lavage during the first four hours, intake of enterosorbents, in / in the introduction of the antidote - N-cysteine, the appointment of methionine inside.

Drug interactions

Reception together with salicylates significantly increases the risk of nephrotoxic action. While taking barbiturates, anticonvulsants, tricyclic antidepressants, rifampicin, as well as alcohol, butadione, the risk of a hepatotoxic effect of the drug increases. Paracetamol enhances the action of anticoagulants.
