(Gaviscon)
Active ingredient and dosage form
Gaviscon - oral suspension (mint):
10 ml contains sodium alginate 500 mg; sodium bicarbonate 267 mg, Calcium carbonate 160 mg; in dark glass bottles of 100, 150 or 300 ml.
Mechanism of action
Gaviscon has antacid action. When ingested, Gaviscon reacts quickly with the acidic contents of the stomach. This forms alginate gel, which prevents the occurrence of gastroesophageal reflux. When regurgitation gel is more likely than the contents of the stomach, enters the esophagus, where it reduces the irritation of the mucous membrane.
Symptomatic treatment of dyspepsia associated with increased acidity of gastric juice and gastroesophageal reflux (heartburn, sour belching), feeling of heaviness in the stomach after eating, including during pregnancy.
Contraindications
hypersensitivity to the components of Gaviscon; children's age up to 6 years.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Maybe.
Adverse reactions
Allergic reactions are possible.
Dosage and Administration
The drug should be taken orally, after meals and before bedtime. Adults and children over 12 years old - 10-20 ml. The maximum daily dose of Gaviscon is 80 ml. Children 6-12 years old - 5-10 ml. The maximum daily dose is 40 ml. For older patients, a dose change is not required.
Special notes
In 10 ml of Gaviscon suspension, the sodium content is 141 mg (6.2 mmol). This should be considered when it is necessary to adhere to a diet with a limited salt content, for example, in some cases of congestive heart failure and in cases of impaired renal function.
